Exhaust Purist Rant Ahead

Is anyone else really annoyed by multiple outlet exhausts? The 124 Abarth has 4 exhaust tips. You have a turbo! You have one exhaust pipe! Yes, you look fancier like a 12 cylinder Lamborghini... Whatever. Do something interesting with a single tip, oval, flattened hexagon... hell even a supertrapp tip and those are ugly!

Dual/quad exhausts are fine and great provided you have two banks of cylinders and separate pipes (crosspipes and shared emissions aside)

Just why add that extra mass for nearly no reason? How don’t 4cyl sports car owners (s2000, NC/ND etc) just instantly take a sawzall to their exhaust? (Rhetorical, I realize you don’t slice up a car you likely just took a large loan on)

Which manufacturer is going to be brave enough to have six exhaust tips?

For looks of course.

To some (many?) having a symmetrical looking rear of the car is pleasing to the eye.

I thought that was due to the placement of the muffler bits and bobs being right at the back. Therefore needing more exhaust pipes to allow the optimal amount of exhaust gases to leave.

I’m highly amused that people actually do get rid of the dual-exit exhaust on the FR-S/BRZ for weight reduction.

I’ve always thought that if you have a dual exhaust, it should be real. My ‘97 SHO had, if I recall correctly, a dual exhaust, but a split pipe from a single outlet.

Symetry, because that looks only half as good:

Other option would be a straight pipe out to where the fog light should be... Hey!

I made one of the product people at a car show almost have an aneurysm when I called them out on the LFA Triple Exhaust:

Kinja'd!!!

I asked them why does it have 3? They said it had triple exhaust.

I said so a true triple exhaust system?

Yes.

That’s idiotic why would you even put in all that extra effort to make a 3rd pipe system. No way does that happen.

It’s a triple exhaust.

...ok buddy.

I’m pretty sure Bugatti, or Voisin, or Hispano-Suiza, or one of those guys had a car in the late ‘20s or ‘30s with six, or eight exhaust outlets... But I can’t find a picture right now... my GIS is failing :(

I hate it too. Exhaust is like the only mod I do to cars, so whatever I get next will have that fixed if its a lie. Current car is one pipe, one muffler but has two tips.

Nah the guy was implying it had a split exhaust manifold on one side- that there were 3 exhaust manifolds (the above was a summary of the convo). He was saying it was truly triple exhaust, manifold, cats, mufflers, 3 sets.

Implying that owners are more likely to get a loan on a car because it has unnecessary exhaust tips. Really, guy?

What? I’m implying that most people don’t have 10, 20 or 30 thousand dollars laying about to buy a sports car which would hinder taking a sawzall to it.

Edit: I’ll also assume that multiple exhaust tips market well since nearly every modern car has them. So yes, people are more likely to take out loans if there are multiple exhaust tips.

Ah, that wouldn’t make any sense at all. Now if it was a V12, you could technically dump sets of 4 into 3 pipes, but that would be pointless and inefficient.

The strange part is that it was an inline 8 with 6 exhausts.

I pretty much agree. My LS400 and S600 both have dual exhaust tips and I think they look much better for it.

This didn’t really bother me until 2003 when I sold cars to put food on the table. I lost a sale because a guy wanted an Altima V6 SOLELY because it had dual exhaust tips and the base model had one. Not for any other reason. From then on, I’ve paid way too much attention. The Asian and American brands are the worst, at least until now most Euro cars have remained practical in that respect. Most.

Not all that crazy, really. It would be more sensible to have four or five (like the Marmon V16 exhausts), but porting off of a repeated four-pattern (single double single single double single) isn’t totally nuts. You could end up there if you had a V16 based on a small block Chevy if it was set up similarly to the GM V12.
